The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman

ocean at end of lane

This is a beautiful short novel. I am sure big fans of Gaiman will read this is one sitting. I like him, but I am not his biggest fan, I like some of his stuff, but not all. I loved this book, though.

It is a fantastical fairy tale set in the Sussex countryside in the ’70s. It’s an adventurous and exciting read, mainly because of the supernatural occurrences. There are three magical women who live at the end of our protagonist’s lane, and they arrived in this world via the ocean (or pond, depending on your point of view) by their house. They are not witches, but they do magic. They are plagued by a creature that is not a demon, but it is demonic. I think that is what I like most about this novel. It is about a supernatural world but the characters are not any standard supernatural beings. So, that’s what keeps the reader on the edge of their seat, you have no clue at all what could happen next because you can now know the rules of this fantasy world and the creatures who are in it.

A very lovely book for adults, with magic in it that children can also read. If they dare. It’s scary stuff.
