The Secrets of Mary Bowser by Lois Leveen

Lois Leveen is an academic historian and a lover of literature, and this is her first novel, although you wouldn’t know it. The story was inspired by real people. The protagonist, Mary Bowser, really existed, she was born a slave, then worked as a spy working for “the Union” during the American Civil War.
